Is Industial Design a viable career path?

Where could I find information on schools for degrees in industrial design, the job outlook for the occupation, and entry-level wages?

Evaluating a career is one of the most crucial decisions you can take in life. My son wanted guidance with his career options in recent times, so he visited the website in the box below, which has some sensible instruction on career decision-making. It definitely happened for him because he now is aware of precisely what he wants, and more importantly what he needs to do to get there!

I need help with what kind of job I want!?

I’m still in high school, and I know I’m still young, but I have to start thinking about jobs/majors. So I need help! I need some ideas… I am out-going, am creative, and like art. These are what I am looking for (any one of these would be fine, just not a boring, routine job):

1. A job to do with fine arts (that has good pay)
2. A job to do with industrial design (like designing products like computers, phones, etc.)
3. Business (starting my own, creative business?)
4. A job that travels a lot (I was thinking journalism or like working for the news, but I don’t know if I am a strong writer)
5. Advertisement
6. Job to do with speech and presentations (like for companies, public relations maybe) [I’m out-going and I like to talk)

advertisement would pay big and you could put your art into it
its a creative challenge that i think you would like Judging by you interest

i hope this helped
and please check out my question if you like

Can I major in engineering and minor in industrial design…?

I want to become either an industrial designer or an engineer for Apple. Is there a better chance at getting one job over the other? How should I go about this…. What colleges? What programs? HELP! Will taking engineering courses help me in industrial designing? What do I need to go through? Im great at math and have the ability to take graphic design and art at my HS. Im a sophomore and trying to plan ahead. I have been thinking about this for a while and Im sure that I want to go into this field. Thanks for all the answers out there!

are you sure Apple does this work internal to the company, or do they pay F A Porsche, Frog Design, or iDeo to do it for them?

I would suggest that you reach out to either Frog or IDEO in the San Francisco Bay area, see what there designers suggest.

joining LinkedIn might also be a way to get connected

Can I be a roller coaster designer if i major in architecture or industrial design?

okay so I’m a senior in high school and plan on going to college to major in architecture. The school I got accepted to has the same classes for the first two years in architecture and industrial design so I figured I’d pick between the two within those first two years.

If I stick to architecture or industrial design, could I get a job at a roller coaster design firm? Its what I want to do for a living and im wondering if this is an okay major to start.

I already know that they look for all different types of engineering but could someone like me work on a team to design roller coasters?

Well, you might, if they want a rollercoaster to look pretty or have clever design.
I think you would need mechanical engineering…. and the mathematics to back it up.
The thing has to work, and be safe.
How it looks is a poor relation.
You could use some elements of industrial design. Or you could consult with the designing engineer. But DO the design? Not likely.

I have four year degree, don’t like my career, what should I do?

I have a Bachelor Degree in Industrial Design. I currently make $45K per year in U.S.A Portland Oregon. I want to make more, designers use computers most of the time, my eye sight is getting very blurry because I use a computer 7-8 hours a day, even with lots of breaks at work. I want to change careers so I can avoid sitting in a chair most of the day and want to make twice my current salary within a year or two. My back also hurts with extensive sitting due to past car accidents, but I am 26 and pretty healthy and somewhat athletic so I am not handycapped. What is a good career that only requires under a year of training / certification? I also want a career that is not susceptible to outsourcing (example: car mechanic, family doctor). Design and engineering jobs are getting payed less in the states because the salaries need to compete with outsorced positions overseas. That is another reason I want to dump design and look for something else. I am social and I like cars.

RC Drilling go get a job start as a offsider you will love it

I love to design and keep thinking about Industrial Design?

I have a Masters in Engineering and have been a successful product design engineer. I went to Design School to study in an Industrial Design Masters program but found it too demanding to balance family (married with children) and being an older student. So, I finished one year of the two year program. I have found it extremely difficult to break into the Industrial Design profession even though I have a Mechanical Engineering bachelors degree, a Master in Manufacturing and studied Design at RISD for a year. I also have applied to teach ID. I feel that their is some bias by some designers against engineering. I know that I have run into bias by a design consultancy (Fitch) against large corporation past employees in the past. I would really like to work at a company like IDEO or Design Continuum, or a design school that is highly creative. Also, I am in my forties and wonder if age may be a problem with getting an ID dream job. It appears that Industrial design is very youth oriented (correct me if you disagree.) Can anyone give me their perspective of wether its worth pursuing at my age and how best to pursue this goal???

Hi from France ♫

Go for what you love Miss !… I have been at Art School when I was 38 and I never regretted it ( I’m 48 now)…Anyway I don’t have kids and I’m not married .. But all the same, go for what you love !

Have a great day,

Cat.

Which is better web designing courses?? or Industrial automation?

I am Electrical engineering student. I am interested in doing a course in either web designing or Industrial automation. Which is better for my future in terms of jobs and salary? I am interested in both and I am struggling to make a choice..please help me…

I have a middle way for that.Get as much info on Electrical Engg. as possible & create a website on that subject. It should contain latest stuff from your industry(electrical engg.). Over the period of time you will start earning a handsome income from this website. And you don’t have to devote your full time for it. You can manage this on part time basis.

Industrial Design or Product Development?

Hey everyone

I am currently working in an Automotive industry. i did my B.tech in Mechanical engineering.

I have decided to do M.S abroad in Product development. But i m also interested in Industrial design. But i would like to know the difference in job profile with these two courses. and which one would be a better option for an engineer. Is industrial design preferable only for Arts students?

And in addition, would it be good to do M.S in the UK? or would countries like Sweden or Germany be better?

Thanks in advance for ur valuable reply.. Mush appreciated…

Personally, I feel that industrial design ties in more specifically with mechanical engineering than product development (which can be a very wide field).

Given that you’re in the automotive industry, industrial design (which involves everything from CAD to machine design) will be more relevant.

Go for a degree from either US or Germany.

Is an Associate’s in Architectural and Industrial design a good path to take?

I have some experience AutoCAD, and I like it. Not sure if I want to go the full route and make it my career though. Are there a lot of jobs out there for people with that degree? I live in New York.
Will it be hard to find a job after 2 years of schooling?

I got a 4 year degree in Physics and decided to go into architecture. I also live in NY and with the associates degree and a solid knowledge of AutoCAD you’ll have no problem finding a job. I look often at careerbuilder.com and see plenty of opportunites in NY. Every architect needs a drafter.

Plus living in NY with a 2 yr degree and 8 years experience you are eligable to take the tests to become a licensed architect. So 10 years from you start you’ll be able to make some serious money. It sounds like a long time but I’m guessing you won’t even be 30.

Just make sure it truly intrests you and you can see yourself using AutoCAD for 40 hours a week until then.

When and if you do decide to look for a job I suggest starting out in a small company in the Hamptons or the city, stay away from the larger firms. I’ve learned the hard way, they turn you into robots repeating the same tasks daily.
