Contemporary Cars, Automotive Design.

CONTEMPORARY CARS / CAR DESIGN / BEST CARS DESIGN / SLIDE SHOW /SLIDES / DISEÑO AUTOMOTRIZ CONTEMPORÁNEO / ZEITGENÖSSISCHES AUTO DESIGN / DISEGNO AUTOMOBILISTICO CONTEMPORANEO

This basic presentation is intended as a brief exposition of the design of some most mundane automobiles in production recently. It is a discretional selection, it is not meant to be a hierarchical compilation. It intends this only, to expose some automotive design.

Any current compilation of this sort and indeed any present debate concerning cars must take into consideration the formidable impact the automotive industry and its production have over cultures, economies and more recently over the environment; more so cars with big engine displacements. The car industry by far constitutes one of the largest worldwide in terms of economic value, material reproduction and transformation, people employed and naturally government policy. It is in this regard worth noting that the car industry was developed under notable distorted societal conditions. Not only has car production been extensively subsidised, but it has also been promoted, given its immense value-generation and creation of employment, to a large degree in systematic disregard to specific social demands (i.e. as anthropologically or sociologically identified or as promoted by local communities). The recent patterns of industrial and geographical planning have also been developed taking into account the existence of large individual means of transportation, without any further comprehensive study on its geo-social efficiency, impact or a similar debate in society. The car industry, as its related counterpart, the petroleum-extracting industry, have formed an interest group, a lobby, exerting a disproportional and non-legitimate influence over parliaments and governments, often times influencing legislation and policies by financial paralegal extortion. Much more importantly, however, both industries have been developed with a large economic distortion: The car industry was backed by a booming petroleum industry with low prices, the technological pattern of cars was developed over time considering a certain level of oil prices; these prices, however, have so far always been set in the market without any taxation to its externalities i.e. its damages to third parties and the exhaustion of the non-renewable resources it uses. This occurred as central governments, notably that of the United States of America, failed to comprehensively tax oil production(as it is the case with most other industries). The influence of both lobbies is believed to have been closely related to this phenomenon. As a result, fuel prices, also for other industries, have remained artificially low, inefficient technological patterns become mainstream and are now also spread to developing countries, as they are impelled to a specific pattern and a pace of development, one which, if not implemented, would mean regional economic, social and cultural exclusion. As is well known, the degradation of air and water ways has in the recent years led to several disasters and has recently been provenly ociated with the warming of the atmosphere. The ensuing natural disasters logically affect poor countries populations much more severely than rich ones. As a result, people in these countries have died and die in the hundred thousands, millions lose homes, tens of millions lose jobs and in several regions they have also considerably hardened the means of mothers to find food for their children.

Many of us car enthusiasts believe that the car industry CAN become more efficient and global economy fairer and more just. Chances for everyone, also to afford cars, respecting and preserving the habitat. Cars CAN be in harmony with what surrounds them.
